The way the x rays are taken especially if your dentist still use radiographic film instead of digital will not be affected in the radiograph. However your dentist will only be able to take certain x-rays. He will not be able to take a panoramic radiograph with your tongue ring in, but the other x-ray that can be taken will show the cavities. the film actually goes between your tongue and teeth so when the xrays pass through the teeth they hit the xray film and don’t actually go through your tongue. Radiographs are also used to diagnose interproximal(between teeth) that can’t be seen by a clinical exam( just looking in the mouth).
