No, you don’t need bit guards unless the bit doesn’t fit your horse right. Just get the bit, and don’t worry about bit guards unless you see evidence of pinching. I’ve got a loose ring french link snaffle for my mare, and haven’t needed bit guards in the 10 years or so that I’ve used that bit.
