What I was taught was read it 10 times every day. The closer you got to a test, the more you read them. Then just before the test you read the continually. That works for me, in conjunction with also writing them down, using them in sentences, etc. I need to UNDERSTAND the idea or word or whatever to be able to remember it. Now, if it’s to remember something for life, what I was taught was to read it (or use it, which I prefer) as many times a day as possible. If it’s a new word, you just use it in conversation a lot. The next day you use it about half the time, and so on, until you’re down to once in the morning and once in the evening. At that point you can skip a day, then skip 2 days, etc. until you’re at every 2 weeks. At that point you should have it. For spelling a word I would write it in as many sentences as possible, or just think of a sentence and write just that. I’d follow what I did above, and even use it in speech – and spell it in my head when I do.
