Do you know of anywhere in Australia that can supply tempeh starter culture?
Q Hi, I was wondering if you’ve heard of anywhere in Australia that can supply tempeh starter culture? It’s a hard thing to find! A You’re telling me it’s hard to find! I’ve asked around and visited many healthfood and specialty shops to no avail here in Melbourne. I searched the web for stockists anywhere in Australia and have found absolutely nothing. I do however have a crazy idea if you’d like to try it! Looking up information about tempeh starter culture on the Net I have discovered it mainly comprises of a mould called Rhizopus oligosporus, see the following site for a little more information on this culture and tempeh: http://users.chariot.net.au/~dna/koji.html#Tempeh I believe there is a possibility that this mould could be propagated from shop bought tempeh IF any of the culture is still live in the end product. This is much like the practice of using shop bought yoghurt with live culture to make home-made yoghurt. Most moulds have a preferred growing temperature of around 25
