Richard ‘Jock’ Kinneir (1917-1994) and Margaret Calvert (b. 1934) were graphic designers who designed many of the road signs used throughout the United Kingdom. He studied engraving at the Chelsea School of Art from 1935 to 1939, worked as a designer for Central Office of Information and the Design Research Unit, then opened his own practice in 1956 and taught part-time at the Chelsea School of Art. Margaret Calvert was one of his students who he hired to assist him with designing signage for the Ministry of Transport. In 1964 Kinneir made her a partner and renamed his practice to Kinneir Calvert Associates. She has designed commercial fonts for Monotype, including the ‘Calvert’ font. She was awarded an honorary degree by the University of the Arts London in 2004.
