Probably as much as Christians ignore the textbook definition of ‘cult’. The problem here is that both sides want to be addressed by their own definitions rather than reasonably assessing the other and finding a middle ground definition, so to speak. For example, many atheists do not like to be defined as “disbelieving” because that implies that something actually exists that they simply refuse to believe in making them seem obstinate. Likewise, many Christians can’t stand being called ‘religious’. Many Christians claim that Christianity is not a ‘religion’ but a ‘personal relationship’ with God. They want to be defined this way because it makes their religion appear to be truer than other religions.
