Do you have to play the first Bioshock to understand Bioshock 2?
You can play BS2 by itself but you really should play the first one first. It’s a better game, you get more of the backstory and you really want to get a sense of Rapture and the environment. The first one really is one of the best FPS’s out there, the second one is good but not as good. If you own the second one but not the first, rent the first one first. Once you’ve played the first one and before the second one, check out the “official” teaser site from BioShock 2, http://www.somethinginthesea.com/home.ht… You’ll get a great and very involved story surrounding one of the characters in the second game. If you follow this entire story it will really hit you hard when you play through BS2.
