Do you have to be retired to be a non-executive director e.g. in the NHS?

Most non-executives are no longer ‘retired’. Business has evolved so rapidly in the last 10 years that most need non-execs who are very in touch with how modern business is conducted. It does depend on the specialism of the non-exec they are looking for. Most have a particular specialism that offers insight – e.g. Finance , communications etc. PR would be a good one for an individual hospital trust …but perhaps not for a wider NHS role (?). Your current experience should be valuable to any business.

From the state the NHS is in at the moment, it would seem that not only do you need to be retired to obtain such a post but you need to remain so. But I wish you luck in your quest.
