41 Headed To 2009 USA Softball Women’s National Team Selection Camp Posted in June 9th, 2009 by admin in Fastpitch News OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) announced today the final list of attendees to the 2009 USA Softball Women’s National Team Selection Camp, June 8-12, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. These 41 athletes will compete to earn a spot on one of two teams set to compete this summer at four events including the KFC World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City. On June 15, two rosters will be announced that include the USA Softball Women’s National Team and the USA Softball Women’s Elite Team. The USA Softball Women’s National team will represent the U.S. at the Canada Cup (July 4-12) and the World Cup (July 16-20). The rosters for the Japan Cup (July 31- Aug. 2) and the Pan American Qualifier (July 31- Aug. 9) will be a combination of athletes from the Women’s National team and the Elite team. After representing her school for four years, Stacey Nelson will move on to represent her country. Nelson, who holds nearly every UF softball pitching record , was one of 18 players named to the 2009 USA Softball Women’s National Team and one of 16 named to the Japan Cup team on Monday after spending a week at the team’s selection camp in Chula Vista, Calif. Although cautiously optimistic about her chances of making the national team during the camp, Nelson remained as humble as ever about the experience of competing for a roster spot. “All the pitchers here are so fantastic that I kind of feel like I’m at the bottom looking up,” Nelson said in a phone interview Thursday. “But it’s such an honor just to be here and to get to pitch to hitters like these.” The selection camp was Nelson’s first time on the diamond since Washington swept UF in the Women’s College World Series championship series. “It’s kind of helped get my mind off the loss and everything,” she said. “That was a long week
The Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) announced today the three teams that will represent USA Softball Women’s National team program during the 2009 summer season, kicking off with the Canada Cup, July 4-12. The three teams were selected after a selection camp last week in Chula Vista, and the rosters will represent a new era of USA Softball as there are only eight returning players from the 2008 Olympic team. The USA Softball Women’s National Team will compete at both the Canada Cup in Surrey, B.C., and the KFC World Cup of Softball presented by Six Flags in Oklahoma City, Okla. The team will be coached by Head Coach Jay Miller (Starkville, Miss.) and Assistants Gordon Eakin (Sandy, Utah), Ken Eriksen (Tampa, Fla.) Barbara Jordan (Northridge, Calif.).
