The Wood Truss Council of America (WTCA) published the results of a study that was performed in cooperation with the Building Systems Council of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in 1996. Results showed a $3,356 savings in the construction of a 2,600 square foot house using components. Savings include indirect costs like trash removal. The truss and wall panel house used 148 man-hours of on-site labor versus 401 man-hours for the conventionally framed house. The labor rate computed was $20 per hour. The component-built house saved 5,300 board feet of lumber with the rough framing package weighing in at $1,529 more than the conventionally built house. The report can be read in its entirety at the WTCA’s website at www.sbcindustry.com/projects/woodtruss/images/publication_images/fad.pdf (PDF).
