Putting the camera in AUTO is never a good idea if you want a specific photo, as the camera assumes you want a “generic” photo and guesses as to what to do. You’ll want to shoot product shots with the camera in manual mode and on a tripod. For learning about exposure, I recommend Bryan Peterson’s book Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera. This will help you understand how exposure works, how to get the proper exposure, and what all those settings mean on your camera. (As an aside, product shots can be good or fantastic. If this is for a company with a decent budget, please have them get a pro, as you can tell in the brochure or ad that it wasn’t a pro. Believe me, I can tell. If this is for selling on eBay, read the book!
