I have only ever been independent as a designer so I cant really say. I know from my previous life that a key to success in the employment market is the ability to be flexible. Im lucky in that I only have to be flexible with me. Since many of the larger companies appear keener to employ shoe designers that already have made a name for themselves at their own expenses than a recent shoe design graduate – do you feel as if the experimental groundwork is done at little or no cost to the bigger companies? No. We live in a commercial market and those companies are only larger (read successful) because they maximise value. It makes sense to me that they might choose an established (read risk free) talent rather than untested talent.
