Do you feel that it is acceptable to create transgenic animals to help treat humans?
We make transgenic animals in laboratories every day. We are already using transgenic animals to help treat humans. Often, transgenic animals are used to study potential oncogenes. These experiments will likely one day lead to better treatments for cancer patients. The only cons I see are the moral ones. Many people oppose the use of animals for scientific experiments altogether and will stop at nothing to hinder scientific progress. But, would people really prefer it if we started to make transgenic humans? As for direct from animal drugs: it doesn’t make sense not to give it a try. However, there will be individuals who see it as their moral duty to not take an animal’s life to save their own. This is their own choice and it really delves into the issue of informed consent. If treatments directly derived from transgenic animals were created, the patient has the right to know where the treatment came from.
