Do you believe that aps who adopt from foster care should continue to receive financial support?
I had this conversation with an adoption worker not too long ago and I managed to get some of the background into on the subject, at least in our jurisdiction. Up until a few years ago foster parents received the assistance to care for their foster children and when and if they chose to adopt the assistance could continue if the family had a need for it. Their level of need was not solely based on their income but it was also a reflection of the lifelong care that a child may need due to any special needs they may have. Two or three years ago the system was changed to have that assistance continue on regardless of the income of the adoptive parents and believe it or not it was not continued at the request of foster parents but was an initiative by the Department. They worked for years to get the legislation changed and now it is entrenched and will remain.
