Because the hormones involved in lactation are the same as those involved in orgasm, it is believed that a woman could have an orgasm while breastfeeding. Because oxytocin causes the uterus to contract, some women may misinterpret the cramping sensations as orgasmic contractions [227]. The most common description of sensation have been those of a “warm afterglow,” which many women experience following orgasm. Women appear to have the innate ability to separate the breast’s maternal function from sexuality while they are nursing. Prolactin, the mothering hormone, gives the mother a calm, warm, peaceful feeling after nursing. These sensations are quite normal.
