I am defintiely not a spider expert, but I listed Wikipedia and a site that seems reputable as my sources here if you want to take a look. They seems to be wandering spiders, so if it was just out by itself when you found it, then it was probably out hunting for food alone. It would be a good idea to shake out your clothing, shoes and bedspread before getting into them in case it did have friends though (or for other things). I have a lot of bugs where I live too (subtropics) and that is standard procedure just so there are no surprises since we get a lot of wolf spiders in our house and the occasional lost beetle or ant. The good news is that in a worst case scenario, were you to be bitten, they are not fatal and you could just go get treatment. It actually sounds like the bites will just go away, but I would want to get it checked just to be sure.
