No. We have more of a separation than used to be common… meaning that the church does not directly make the laws and hand out punishments. That doesn’t mean that religion doesn’t affect our government on every level, though. Religion is something that is so deeply ingrained in most people that politicians can’t resist using it to suit their needs. They know that religious beliefs can be used to rally support behind a cause if they make it seem that going against that cause would be the same as going against the religion. Religion is in our courts, in our schools, and on our money. If you make it publicly known that you don’t believe in God you might as well get ready for anything you say to possibly be discredited because of your “lack of faith.
