Do we currently live in the Elizabethan Era?
When Elizabeth ascended the throne in 1952, commentators pronounced the coming of a new Elizabethan Age. It was all done for show, however. The fact is, the designation of the “Age” generally doesn’t happen at the time of the monarch, but afterward. During the first Elizabeth’s reign nobody spoke of living in “Elizabethan England.” The same was true of the ages of Victoria and Edward. These were designations that people gave to the periods after the monarchs passed away. I have no doubt that when QE II passes away, people will write and speak of the “2nd Elizabethan Age” — and what an age it’s been.
