Do water and wastewater facilities get a larger tolerance zone?
• Only if the water or wastewater facility operator notifies the excavator of their need for a larger tolerance zone. They may request up 61 inches from either side of the outside dimensions of the buried facility. Therefore, the minimum distance of the tolerance zone could be 122 inches across. • What if the water or wastewater operator is unable to locate their facility within a 61 inch tolerance zone? If the operator of a Tier 2 facility is unable to provide the location of its facilities within a 61-inch tolerance zone, the operator shall: • Mark the approximate location of its facilities to the best of its ability; • Notify the excavator that the markings could be inaccurate; • Remain on site or in the vicinity of the excavation; and • Provide additional guidance to the excavator in locating the facilities as needed during the excavation.
