Do Virginia Colleges Want The Drinking Age Lowered?
The presidents of about a hundred colleges and universities have signed an initiative to re-open the debate about the legal drinking age. Five Virginia school leaders are among that group including the president of Randolph Macon. The public statement school leaders have signed, known as the Amethyst Initiative, in essence says that the current drinking age is not working, and specifically has created a culture of dangerous binge drinking on college campuses. A statement released by Randolph Macon says that President Robert Lindgran signed the statement last month “to raise awareness, re-examine this issue and open it up for a serious, informed and responsible public debate.” Randolph Macon has had issues with underage drinking. In December 2006, a 19-year-old student nearly died from drinking to much following a party at a campus fraternity while an additional student was convicted of providing the alcohol.
