Do violent video games influence aggressive behaviour in children?
I think this question needs to be looked at from a different angle… It’s nearly impossible to find a child who hasn’t played video games these days. Most video games have some level of violence in them, whether it’s cartoon-based or blood-and-guts. It boils down to the parents, in my opinion, making sure the child knows that just because he can beat someone silly with a baseball bat in a video game doesn’t mean that he can do it in real life. Nearly every story you hear in the media about someone going totally mental and on a killing/beating spree is tied to the fact that the killer/beater/whatever played video games. It’s an easy target, and it generates debate and talk… that’s what news outlets want to do. What you will find if you look a bit deeper into these people’s histories is that there were other serious issues long before these guys played video games.
