The legal drinking age here in the states is now 21, but it used to be 18. I believe the original idea was to prevent young adults from drinking and driving, claiming that this age group was responsible for so many alcohol-related deaths. In reality, it was really middle-aged men that were causing most of the alcohol-related accidents. I believe the key lies in encouraging responsible drinking at an early age. If alcohol is strictly forbidden until 21, this will only encourage kids to sneak booze. If alcohol is introduced with dinner (ie one glass of good wine or beer), it can be learned to be appreciated for its taste, aroma, pairing with food, etc. at an early age. Alcohol shouldn’t be looked at as a taboo, but a thing that can be dangerous if abused but wonderful if properly respected and appreciated.
