There are few documents that have revolutionized the world. The Gettysburg Address, given on November 19, 1863, is one of these great documents. The consecration of the Gettysburg Cemetery was planned as primarily a state event. At the time the land was owned by the state of Pennsylvania. Lincoln was invited almost as an afterthought, and event organizers were surprised that he accepted. While Lincoln was not the main speaker, he recognized the importance of the event, leaving his wife at the White House, hysterical over the illness of one son after the loss of William. Lincoln made sure he arrived early, avoiding traffic delays caused by the thousands descending on Gettysburg and by writing a powerful speech. There have been many rumors about when or how Lincoln wrote the speech: on a train, while listening to Edward Everett’s two hour long speech, or possibly the Wills house the night before with Secretary of State Seward.
