Do they usually do surgery for a complex cyst on the thyroid?

Yes, they can do surgery for cysts that become cancerous or kill them through radioactive iodine treatments. It sounds like there may be cause for concern. These cysts often are benign and nothing to worry about however, it concerns me that your doctor (I’m assuming your Primary Care Physician) is sending you to an ENT, rather than an Endocrinologist, who specializes in the thyroid. An ENT will not do the proper testing and research because he/she does NOT specialize in endocrinology. You should go back to your PCP (primary care physician) and ask him/her to refer you to an Endocrinologist. Most do simple tests to check out your cysts, or ‘nodules’ as they call them and can tell you immediately what’s going on through bloodwork and a series of in-office tests. I have nodues in my thyroid as well and have to see my Endo twice a year for check-ups as they can turn cancerous. Good luck – please ask for an Endo, not an ENT – it would be a waste of your money they are totally different spec
