June 29, 2001 — Shooters-on-the-Water is one of the most popular clubs in “the Flats,” Cleveland’s trendy club district that lines both sides of the Cuyahoga River. And this summer, one of the more popular — and pricey — drinks at Shooters is Red Bull and Absolut, says general manager Frank Maisal. Red Bull is one of a dozen or so energy drinks that are the rising stars of the beverage market. The drinks, each with a label that carries a dizzying list of herbs, vitamins, sugars, and proteins, claim to be a type of bottled energy that gives users a quick pick-me-up. On flashy web sites the usefulness of the drinks — Red Bull, Atomic Energy Drink, and Adrenaline Rush are just a few of the products — is promoted to elite athletes.
