Do they call it Ultimate or Ultimate Frisbee?
Frisbee is a registered trademark – that much is correct. My word processing software prompts a capital ‘F’ every time I type it. The generic term is flying disc. That being said, no one calls the sport Ultimate Flying Disc. The sport is regularly called Ultimate or even Ultimate Frisbee in as much as the holder of the trademark, Wham-O, can hardly prevent players from calling the sport what they want. If you wanted to manufacture flying discs, Wham-O will be interested if you sell them as “Frisbees” as that would interfere with their trademark. If you are interested in the history of the flying disc and the use of the term frisbee, I highly recommend The Complete Book of Frisbee by Victor Malafronte. Chapter 7 reveals the results of the author’s investigation into Wham-O’s trademark standing – hint, Victor shows that Wham-O is not justified in holding it. I’d like to see the trademark revoked.
