Do the vertical logs set on the floor joist and sub floor or are they supported?

Yes they are supported by a 6 inch by 6 inch timber placed vertically from the top of the foundation to the bottom of the sub floor. This transfers the bulk of the weight of the home directly to the foundation and not just on framing members.
