Do the Rocky films need to be watched in order?

Whilst Rocky Balboa is effectively Rocky 6 it is the only sequel in the series that does not need any real back story. The others can be spliced together and watched as one huge movie. There are flashbacks in films 2 to 5 that enhance the experience but if you go into Balboa knowing only that he was a world champion boxer this will be sufficient. Rocky Balboa, made almost 20 years after Rocky 5, is great for us oldies who remember the originals back in the day. We always loved Rocky (well, maybe not 5 so much!) and this was a good poignant closure for the series. BTW – Where did you pay £1 for it???
