Do the offspring of feral cats make good pets?
Yes! Kittens are easy and generally tame to to the point that you would never know they were ever wild or feral – provided you begin working with them at 4-8 weeks of age. Kittens become progressively harder to work with the older they get. A good rule of thumb – a wild kitten 8 weeks of age will take up to 8 weeks to fully tame. Feral older than 10-12 weeks become increasingly difficult to work with and at 1 year are considered by most to be impossible. If your looking for a ‘normal’ pet cat I wouldn’t hesitate to suggest a feral rescue kitten captured under 12 weeks of age. After 12 weeks or so the little guys will likely have a little bit to a lot of a wild streak and be very timid around everyone but you and your immediate family. We have had some great success with some of these older animals – even up to a year old – the oldest ones will require enormous amounts of patience, just the right socializing conditions and sadly at times they never fully adjust to life as a pet.
