Do the huskies get anything to eat or drink between tours?
Just like us, if the huskies eat or drink too much before running they will get a stomach ache. It is also possible for them to twist their stomach if they are over watered. It is important to give some water, however, or else they will eat too much snow and become dehydrated. (Eating the cold snow dehydrates the dogs, as they spend too much energy warming up again.) We do provide all the huskies with a healthy amount of warm water in between tours. Each dog will receive ¾ of a litre of water; enough to keep them hydrated for the next tour. All the water is kept in large thermoses to keep it hot and fresh. Each time the dogs are watered, we mix in some high quality kibble and canned puppy food. This provides the dogs with additional nourishment to get them through the day. We also mix in a high quality Glycro Charge powder which helps replace the dog’s electrolytes quicker. It is a doggie’s Gatorade! Learn more about our dog care here!
