Do the facts on the ground justify the U.S. invasion of Iraq?
The president gave four key reasons for the invasion: • Saddam was an imminent threat to the U.S. and the world; • Saddam was a menace to his neighbors; • Saddam was harboring Al Qaida terrorists; and • Saddam was guilty of so many crimes against his own people that he ought to be removed. I’ve previously discounted the first three reasons, but I now take a moment to review the claims about weapons of mass destruction (WMD) since this reason was the one most advanced by the administration. We have not up until this point found weapons of mass destruction. As time goes on it seems increasingly unlikely we fill find any in any quantity. In each case where either the army or Secretary Rumsfeld has announced a find, it has turned out to be a false positive.
