Do the D&TA provide any advice on teaching pupils in D&T with no use of English?
A. Relevant guidance which we hope will help you to address this issue can be found in the revised D&T Association publication ‘Risk Assessment in Design and Technology Teaching Environments’ in the section on ‘Risk assessment: providing a safe working environment’. We would recommend that the school obtain a copy of this document and follow the advice and recommended procedure, in particular in this section in relation to the number and nature of learners in the group, including learners with learning and language difficulties in the main teaching language. This will involve the department in undertaking a risk assessment of the different working environments in which these students are expected to be taught and provide a procedure for formally sharing your concerns with the Headteacher. We would recommend that the risk assessments are undertaken jointly by a member of the department and a member of the senior management team. Decisions can then be taken as to how to proceed with this
