ANSWER from Sean Kelley on December 8, 1997: Except for a mission over 7 days, the crew gets very little free time. Virtually every minute of every day is schedule out in something called the Flight Plan, and updated daily by the Flight Activities Officer (FAO). This is done because every minute of on orbit time is very expensive (although shuttle operations costs have dropped over 50% in the past 3 years). The crew does sneak looks out the window but they mostly savor the experience after the flight.
