Do students receive credit for taking the test?
No, not automatically. The tests are designed for placement. Most students, however, do earn retro credits by following the UW-River Falls test-out policy. This retro-credit policy stipulates that if a student completes the course s/he placed into with a B- grade or better, then credit will be awarded for that course and all previous level courses. Students should talk to the foreign language consultant at orientation if they are interested in this option.

Some Schools/Colleges at UW-Madison have a policy on retro credits which involves completing the course the student places into with a grade of B or better and thus being awarded credit for the course taken and all previous courses. No. The tests are for placement only. However, if the student completes his or her first university level foreign language course with an A or a B, s/he will receive credit for that course plus retro credits for the previous courses. For example, if a student completes F251 (3rd semester, 4 credits) with an A or B, the student earns 4 credits for that course plus eight retro credits (4 each for F141 and F142). Maximum of 16 retro credits per language.
