DO STUDENTS OF LIMITED ENGLISH PROFICIENCY (LEP) HAVE TO MEET THE STANDARDS?
Yes. Students with limited English proficiency shall meet the same standards as all other students. However, in accordance with federal law, English language proficiency cannot be the factor that determines that a student has not met required learning standards at grades three through eight. Students may have access to various modifications to assist them in meeting standards. Promotion/retention shall be determined by ESL and classroom teachers and administrators. HOW DOES LEARNING FIRST AFFECT HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION? Class of 2004 and beyond graduates must: Meet eighth grade reading, math, writing, and computer skills standards. Satisfy 10th grade Writing Assessment requirement. Satisfy senior exit speech and project requirements. Successfully complete one of the following Courses of Study: College Technical requires 28 units of credit, three courses from a chosen pathway, and a minimum of Technical Math II for students entering 9th grade in 2008-09 and beyond.
