Do students have to pay National Insurance?
YES, students are not exempt from paying National Insurance. However, if you earn less than £110 in a week (before tax deductions) you will not be eligible to pay National Insurance for that week. Your employer should deduct National Insurance contributions from your earnings whenever you earn above a £110 per week in the tax year April 2009 to April 2010. For more detailed information visit the relevant H.M. Revenue & Customs web-page. A more detailed H.M. Revenue & Customs web-page is also available. Any pay earned above the £110 per week personal allowance (before tax deductions), will incur National Insurance contribution payments of 11%. These should be automatically deducted from your pay by your employer. International students are NOT exempt from paying National Insurance. If you are an international student and you do not have a National Insurance number, you will need to apply for one. Information for International students.
