77% of faculty responding to the AAP survey expressed the view that most of their students benefit from using the supplemental course materials available. 65% said that supplemental materials help retain students who might otherwise be in danger of failing. 65% also agree that supplemental materials save students time by helping them learn the course material more efficiently. Finally, 57% agree that most students would be more successful in the course work if instructors required supplemental materials (Farmer, 2006d). Only limited data on the effectiveness of learning materials is available. In the USA basic mathematics is an often cited example where online learning significantly improved learning effectiveness.
