Do some birds sing in winter in southern California?
Some will still sing in the winter, but infrequently. They sing mainly to protect territory and to attract mates during their breeding season which is in the spring. Some species do stay year round and may maintain “winter territories”,but they are not protected as stringently as breeding territories, but many others do fly south for the winter. There are some species that come from further north and spent their winters here since the US is south for them. Yes, if you start paying attention to birds year round you will notice when some species arrive and when others leave, and you will see a lot more activity during the spring season.
