Do some Academies teach creationism?
All schools are expected to encourage pupils to explore different views, theories and beliefs in many curriculum subjects – including science and RE – using contemporary and historical sources of evidence. Creationism is one of many differing and often conflicting beliefs which pupils might discuss and consider. This is an essential part of enabling young people to develop their own mature and informed views on moral and ethical issues and to become responsible and active citizens. Although Academies are not bound by the national curriculum, they must teach the core subjects and carry out Key Stage 3 (KS3) assessments in English, maths and science. The National Curriculum programme of study for science covers evolution at Key Stage 4, (ages 14-16). Ofsted has indicated that it is content with the Vardy’s approach to teaching science at Emmanuel CTC, which is their first school, and which has been open for some time.
