Do smokers suffer from coughs more than non-smokers?
Smokers do suffer from coughs at a higher rate than non-smokers. Smokers also develop chronic bronchitis more often: between 15% and 20% of smokers will develop chronic bronchitis over time. And of these, about 18% will go on to become serious conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which involves constriction of the airways and difficulty or discomfort in breathing. This disease alone accounts for 5% to 8% of all deaths in Europe annually.
