Do smokers drink more coffee than non-smokers?
Smokers generally have higher caffeine intake than non-smokers. One possible reason is that smoking hastens the metabolism of caffeine, thus smokers have to drink more caffeine to keep and maintain the same blood levels of caffeine as non-smokers. This interaction also might be of clinical significance in treating nicotine dependence. Since smoking cessation increases caffeine blood levels by 40 percent, and many of the symptoms of caffeine intoxication and nicotine withdrawal overlap (for example, anxiety, insomnia and restlessness), it is possible that some symptoms of nicotine withdrawal are actually those of caffeine intoxication.
