Do singers make up the lyrics for their music or do they pay somebody else to do it?

Most Radio artists have their songs (lyrics and musical arrangement) written for them. Even John Mayer, despite what was said above, actually doesn’t write almost 60% of his own music (he admitted this), he just “buys” his lyrics from better writers than do artists like Spears, Lopez, etc (he bought a couple songs from eric clapton). The basic rule of thumb is that if an artist is on a major american label (and by major i mean sony, columbia, geffen, maverick, etc…and not indie or foriegn subsidiaries of those labels, but the main, American home label), they probably do not write their own music. All of their time is spent touring, performing, on TV, doing guest appearances, etc.
