Do sea monsters exist?

It depends on what you consider a sea monster. At one time the giant squid was considered a sea monster.Fishermen have caught sea creaures that could be considered sea monsters. With the vastness of the oceans and seas, which cover a great deal of the earth, and the fact that we have not explored the oceans to definatley say that there not sea monsters is wrong.Scientests have found bodies of water under the oceans with caves that join them. What we consider sea monsters could definately come through these caves into our oceans.I am sure many sailors have seen them but without pictures they have no proof so they say nothing.

Sea monster legends came from sightings of rare or strange looking sea creatures. Back then, people had no idea what they were looking at, and monsters were believed to be real, so they called these animals “sea monsters.” These were animals like the Giant Squid, etc. The legend of the mermaid is believed to be from sightings of sea cows, a close relative to the manatee. So, in a way, yes. Just, not what everyone makes them out to be.

In prehistoric times there were some very large marine predators such as megalodon, basilosaurus, tylosaurus, and pleurodon that would probably be considered sea monsters by today’s standards but given the thoroughness of past extinction events I doubt that any of them still exist. However, just because they haven’t been seen yet doesn’t mean that they absolutely don’t exist, e.g. the Ceolacanth was thought to have been extinct since the end of the Cretaceous period but a specimen was found off of the coast of Africa in 1938.
