Do scientific explanations of the existence of religion leave any room for faith?
Sosis: Despite the rhetoric coming from some prominent evolutionary scholars that evolutionary research renders religious belief false, irrelevant, or even dangerous, I do not believe that the evolutionary study of religion challenges faith. Justin has written on this extensively; I am in general agreement with his position and I urge those who are interested in this issue to read a recent article he published in the journal Theology and Science. I think scientific explanations are actually essential to a mature religious faith. Science can offer an extremely rich and profound understanding of the world. For a religious believer who perceives sanctity and holiness in the world, science cannot challenge that experience. Science can, however, enhance one’s appreciation for the remarkable complexity that surrounds us. Scientist and religious believer, who may be one and the same, stand in awe of life. The atheistic scientist may be unable to appreciate how the religious believer perceives
