Do scholarship and assistantship awards need to be renegotiated for the second year of MBA study?
When students are awarded assistantships, they’re given a two-year award, provided there’s adequate academic performance (which is defined as a 3.0 GPA). A scholarship, meanwhile, is a one-year award and then, during the second year, you are awarded an assistantship position. So the scholarships do not require any work in the first year, but the second year, there is the expectation that you will work on a graduate assistantship position. Probably about 25 to 27 students actually accept the assistantship award for their second year. The number that have the right to take on a position is much higher than that, but a number of students decide, for a variety of reasons, not to take the assistantship during the second year of business school. For instance, they may get a better assistantship offer from another unit on campus, they may get one of the 20-hour positions through one of the off-campus units, or they may actually decide to continue their internship — if they had a local intern
