Do satanists actually worship the devil?
LaVeyan Satanists do not believe in, nor worship the Christian Satan. We use Satan for its Hebrew meaning, “adversary”, or as a symbol for man living as a prideful animal. We are our own Gods, although we are atheists by definition. If you are interested in more about LaVeyan Satanism, read “The Satanic Bible” by Anton LaVey, or “The Satanic Scriptures” by Peter H. Gilmore.
The Church of Satan, founded by Anton LaVey (author of “The Satanic Bible”) is atheistic. The guiding ethic LaVey wrote about was “enlightened self-interest.” It’s not nihilism. Reading the Satanic Bible would help. Theistic Satanists generally hold to a theological position called maltheism, the belief that the god of the Bible is actually evil and the Bible is his propaganda. Satan is actually the good guy and is working to help humanity escape from the ignorance and enslavement the Biblical god has imposed on us. I’ve never met a serious Satanist who worships the Devil as the epitome of evil.
