There are many forms of “socialism” that can be supported. The reason is very simple. They support the ability of the society as a whole to function in a manner that encourages more productivity and more affluence. The highway system is a form of socialism, but it pays for itself by enabling businesses to prosper and even creates private business that would not exist if it were not for the fact that there is a highway system. Prospering business pay taxes that far exceed the costly of building and maintaining that system. We all profit from it. Republicans most certainly do NOT condemn all forms of Socialism. The new proposed commuter rail systems, on the other hand, are a bad investment. The government subsidizes them or they couldn’t exist. That is a foolish form of Socialism. It costs about $1.15 per every passenger mile to subsidize the existing commuter system and in all but one case, it is faster for the commuter to drive his own car to the destination than it is to take the trai
