I support the smoking ban because I am well aware of the dangers of smoking. Your comparison and premise is an oversimplification of both cause and effect relationships as well as the notion of religion in general. I accept science and have a strong scientific background having worked in research for many years. I am religious by choice as well and will continue to be so. Know your topics more thoroughly before you spout off another ignoratio elenchi for the world to see.
As a scientist, I’ve never had any problems with God existing. Cigarettes cause a great deal more than cancer. If their ill effects were limited to the people who smoked them, they could choose whether to kill themselves or not. However, second hand smoke kills non-smokers too. The ban is not the result of scientific scutiny – more to do with “Thou shalt not kill”.
