Red-tailed hawks prefer live food. When a raptor is first brought to The Raptor Center the handlers make an incision in the mouse or gopher so the bird will visually key in on the blood until it learns to eat dead food. Red-tailed hawks cannot smell their food. Vultures, which prefer dead food, do have an excellent sense of smell.
