Do proximity (parking) sensors and video cameras help?
Some parents may have seen reports that recommend fitting either a video camera or proximity sensor – better known as parking sensors – to help reduce the risk of a reversing accident. The NSW Motor Accidents Authority has commissioned research that shows either of these options alone is not sufficient. If parents are seeking to modify their vehicle to reduce the risk of child reversing accidents, it is necessary to fit both proximity sensors AND a rearward view video camera. Why not just a proximity sensor? Proximity sensors can detect a child standing within a meter or so of the vehicle`s rear. But this distance is NOT enough for drivers to stop in time if they are reversing at about 3km/h. They are mostly useful for detecting obstacles while the car is stationary, prior to reversing. Why not just a video camera? When reverse is first engaged, a driver may not look at the video screen immediately before moving. However, a proximity sensor will provide an audible alert if there is an
